From a historical perspective, the Battle of Antietam was the bloodiest single day in American
history, resulting in over 23,000 American casualties and revealing the true human cost of the Civil War
while shaping public perception of the conflict. Its outcome gave Abraham Lincoln the opportunity
to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, transforming the war into a fight against slavery and
altering its moral and political course.
